Stollery Children's Hospital Age of Admission

January 11 , 2018

From the offices of Christine Westerlund, Senior Operating Officer for Stollery Children's Hospital and Dr. C. Kyriakides, Stollery Medical Director & Associate Zone Medical Director

Effective February 1, 2018, the Stollery Children's Hospital is altering the age of admission to include 17 year olds. This change aligns with the rest of the province's pediatric programs - which include pediatric rehabilitation, children's mental health, children's home care, and Alberta Children's Hospital. The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) uses the under 18 years of age for age definitions for pediatric data.

As in the past, this will not apply to patients that access the obstetrical and women's health programs. These patients would continue to access the appropriate programs and services outside of the Stollery. This also does not preclude younger children or 17 year olds from continuing to be seen in other sites and referred to Stollery as necessary as happens today.

Beginning, in February, as patients present for services, we will begin to make this transition in providing care. Current patients in the system will carry out their current care, as we do not want to cause unnecessary transfers in care.

Having patient and family centred care as our corner stone, this should prevent some 17 year olds from encountering challenges while finding themselves between pediatric and adult care. We look forward to this adjustment and acknowledge everyone's work in making this happen.
