One of the 2018 World's Most Ethical Companies

February 12 , 2018

From the office of Patrick Dumelie, CEO.

I am pleased to announce that Covenant Health has again been recognized by the Ethisphere® Institute as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies®. This is the third consecutive year we have earned this standing, and the designation is something for each of us to celebrate. This year there were a total of 135 companies worldwide to receive this prestigious designation; Covenant Health was one of two organizations in Canada to be named.

The Ethisphere® Institute benchmarks companies against a comprehensive set of ethics standards and leading business compliance best practices. Covenant Health voluntarily participates in this process to help us understand what we are doing well and where we can improve clinical and organizational ethics practices.

Some examples that demonstrate our commitment to ethical integrity include:

  • A comprehensive suite of policies to monitor quality performance, skils matrix, education and training, advocacy, and evaluation for the Board of Directors.
  • Our advocacy efforts with palliativecarematters.ca
  • Documenting our value-add contribution to our one integrated health system by consistently surpassing service volumes, while at the same time, advocating to ensure equitable funding for all our programs and services.
  • Advancing efforts to mitigate the plight of human trafficking in identifying people at risk whom we may encounter in our Emergency Departments.
  • Concentrating effors to keep our workforce health through Mental Health First Aid training for our staff which has trained over 450 team members to date.
  • Supporting grassroots charitable initiatives sucha as clothing and food collection drives, recycling programs and other collaborative efforts such as partnerships with local charities.

Every day we grapple with ethical challenges—whether clinical decisions at the bedside, addressing infrastructure, capital planning, resource allocation, advocating for unmet needs in the community, or modeling consistent ethical behaviour in our interactions with one another.

Thank you for deepening our culture of ethics at Covenant Health and for your own personal and professional commitment to ethical integrity. Being an organization that is recognized internationally for our ethical performance comes with a challenge to continually live up to that standard. It is a challenge we embrace, much as we do with Accreditation and other reviews, in the spirit of improving the quality of all our work, processes and practices.
