UPDATE: doPAMine Injection Shortage

January 19 , 2018

From the office of Shelley Frost, Manager, Pharmacy Integration and Corporate Initiatives, Covenant Health

Please see attached updated medication posting for doPAMine injection. All 3 strengths are now on 100% allocation and Health Canada has approved the release of U.S.-labeled doPAMine bags so you may be receiving this product. The updated medication posting includes new availability information as well as infromation related to the product labeling changes.

For a current list of drug shortages and discontinuations please visit the Medical Staff Portal.

The Issue:
There is a limited supply of all three strengths of doPAMine injection 200 mg, 400 mg, 800 mg in 250 mL D5W bags. Baxter will be supplementing its current inventory with U.S.-labeled product. Except for the labeling, the U.S. doPAMine bags are identical to that normally available on the Canadian market. The only Canadian manufacturer of the doPAMine is Baxter and they are working to resolve the shortage by mid-February 2018.

Key changes include:

  • Physicians should be aware of the shortage of doPAMine bags.
  • To conserve our stock and ensure that it is available for those patients with no other treatment options, effective immediately all use of doPAMine injection will be reserved for:
    • Crash carts
    • Clinical indications where an alternative vasopressor and/or inotropic agent is not suitable*. Note that norepinephrine is available in limited quantities.

*Alternatives are provided for clinican information and may not be appropriate for all clinical situations. The information provided does not replace clincian judgement.

  • Care areas may receive doPAMine 200 mg and 400 mg in 250 mL D5W bags that is labeled differently that the current Canadian supply.
    • Please note the U.S. -labeled bags do not include several pieces of information typically seen on the Canadian product (e.g. DIN, warnings such as: store at 15-25°C, and protect from linght). Example shown below.
