Beclomethasone (Qvar®) 50 mcg/dose and 100 mcg/dose MDI Shortage

The Issue: There is a back order of beclomethosone (Qvar®) 50 mcg/dose and 100 mcg/dose metered dose inhalers (MDIs). The only Canadian manufacturer of these products is Valeant Canada. The estimated availability date for both strengths is late April 2018.

Stock levels are low and may not meet current demands. Inventory will likely be depleted prior to the resolution of this back order.

Key changes include:

  • Physicians should be aware of the shortage of beclomethasone 50 mcg/dose and 100 mcg/dose MDIs.
  • Suggested alternatives* include the following (MDIs) as clinically appropriate:
    • Ciclesonide (Alvesco®) 100 mcg/dose (Formulary), and 200 mcg/dose (Non-Formulary)
    • Fluticasone proprionate (Flovent HFA®) 50 mcg/dose, 125 mcg/dose and 250 mcg/dose (Forumlary)
