Medical Leadership Role Descriptions

Chief Medical Officer (CMO)/ Vice President Medicine

  • Reports to the President, Covenant Health
  • Provides strategic leadership to the Medical portfolio, including Medical Staff Office, Medical Education and Infection Control
  • Provides overall corporate coordination of medical resources, ensuring services are carried out in accordance with the Covenant Health Mission, Vision, Values, Ethical Guidelines and Medical Staff Bylaws
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, provides strategic leadership that builds on the tradition, values and strategic directions of Covenant Health. 
  • Directly participates in strategic planning for Covenant Health and ensures medical programs and services are clearly aligned with Covenant Health strategic directions, ensuring effective delivery of same across Covenant Health

Associate Vice President (AVP), Medicine

  • Reports to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO)
  • Collaborate with the CMO, Covenant Health as part of the senior medical team;
  • Facilitate and encourage robust and transparent communication channels;
  • Assist the CMO in providing the administrative function for the Covenant Health Medical Affairs portfolio; and
  • Assist to linking the medical staff to the Covenant Health and AHS medical administration structures and initiatives, i.e. Physician Workforce Planning.

Medical Director

  • Reports to the  AVP, Medicine and/or CMO
  • As a key leader, assists and supports the Vice-President, Medicine & CMO in developing and maintaining a skilled and dedicated medical staff that are aligned with the vision, mission and values of Covenant Health
  • Ensures the medical staff is engaged and integrated into Covenant Health initiatives as well as local and zone planning and decision-making, and in doing so, ensures Covenant Health strategic directions are considered in all decision-making
  • Sustains an effective on-site medical management structure.  
  • Is a respected practicing physician who assists the Vice-President, Medicine in establishing and coordinating a medical presence for Covenant Health

 Facility Chief (EAC)

  • Reports to the Medical Director
  • Head of a major clinical area for a site and ane of the key medical leaders in Edmonton Acute Care
  • Assists the Facility Medical Director with operational matters 
  • Assists Zone Clinical Department Head with quality issues
  • Ensures that standards of care and defined health outcomes are being achieved in their department at the site, 
  • Ensures effective support at the site level for teaching and research where appropriate
  • Advocates for the provision of high quality and safe patient care within their Facility(ies)
  • Deals with concerns from clients regarding the quality of medical/clinical care
  • Works with site medical staff to maintain harmonious relationships

 Section Leads (EAC)

  • Reports to Facility Chief of Department/EAC Facility
  • Head of a major clinical section for a Department within a Facility
  • A key medical leader in Edmonton Acute Care.
  • Assists the Department Facility Chief with operational matters and quality issues
  • Functions as a strong advocate for sound medical/clinical practice
  • Provides clinical leadership, support and coaching to the site medical staff, including developing objectives collaboratively with each physician
  • Active participation in and encouragement in accreditation activities
  • Ensuring compliance on the part of the site medical staff with Covenant Health Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules

 

Program Chiefs - (Rural)

  • Reports to the Medical Director of Facility and head of a  clinical area for a the site 
  • Assists the Facility Medical Director with operational matters and quality matters
  • Ensures that standards of care and defined health outcomes are being achieved in their department at the site, 
  • Ensures effective support at the site level for teaching and research where appropriate
  • Advocates for the provision of high quality and safe patient care within their Facility(ies)
  • Deals with concerns from clients regarding the quality of medical/clinical care
  • Works with site medical staff to maintain harmonious relationships
