How do I?

Please click on the frequently asked questions below to learn more about how to access our library services.  

Get a library card?

All Covenant Health staff and physicians are eligible to obtain a NEOS library card.  Just complete a Library Card Borrower Registration form and return it to CovenantLibrary@covenanthealth.ca, the Grey Nuns library (Rm 0634) or Misericordia library (Rm 1NW-32).  Library staff will contact you when the card is ready for pickup, or can send it out to you via the interoffice mail if you are located at another facility.

Your library card will enable you to borrow books and DVDs from Covenant Health libraries as well as NEOS libraries across the province.

Borrow a book or DVD?

A valid NEOS library card is required to borrow materials. All Covenant Health staff and physicians are eligible to obtain a NEOS library card (see above). If you are located in a Covenant Health facility other than the Grey Nuns or Misericordia, please contact us to arrange to have library materials sent out to your facility.

Find titles available from Covenant Health and NEOS libraries?

You can search by author, title, subject or keyword for library materials in print and electronic format in the NEOS library catalogue. If you are interested only in electronic books and journals you should consult Electronic Resources (A-Z).

What is NEOS?

NEOS is a consortium of government, health, college and university libraries that cooperate to share library resources. Covenant Health is a member of NEOS and our library card holders may borrow materials from any NEOS library, such as the University of Alberta, MacEwan University, and AHS Knowledge Resource Service. All Covenant Health staff and physicians are eligible for a library card.

Borrow materials from the NEOS libraries?

You can borrow, pick up and drop off materials in person at any NEOS library with your NEOS library card. Use the "Place Hold" button in the NEOS library catalogue to have materials sent to a Covenant Health or NEOS library near you. If you are not located close to any of the NEOS libraries, select one of the Covenant Health libraries and contact Library Services to let us know you need it shipped out to you at your facility.

Place a hold on a title in the NEOS catalogue?

To place a hold on a title in the NEOS Library catalogue:

  • find the item you wish to request      
  • click on the Place Hold button 
  • fill in your library card barcode number
  • enter your PIN number (usually the last 4 digits of your home phone number)
  • select the pickup library location of your choice.

If you are not located close to any of the NEOS libraries, select one of the Covenant Health libraries and contact Library Services to let us know you need it shipped out to you at your facility.

Review all my borrowed items and due dates?

You can look up your account in the NEOS library catalogue:

  • click on the My Account tab in the upper right
  • enter your library card barcode number
  • enter your PIN number (usually the last 4 digits of your home phone number, select 'What is my pin?' to reset your PIN if needed)
  • click on the Display User Information button
  • select Checkouts
  • or contact Covenant Health Library Services to look it up for you.

Renew my library book?

You can renew your library materials yourself in the NEOS library catalogue using the My Account tab in the upper right or you can contact Covenant Health Library Services staff to do it for you.

See my titles on hold and my place in the queue?

You can look this up yourself in the NEOS library catalogue:

  • click on the My Account tab in the upper right 
  • enter your library card barcode number
  • enter your PIN number (usually the last 4 digits of your home phone number, click on 'What is my pin?' to reset your PIN if needed)
  • click on the Display User Information button
  • click on Holds
  • or contact Covenant Health Library Services staff to look it up for you.

Request a copy of a journal article?

Through our DOCLINE membership Covenant Health Library Services can obtain articles from a wide variety of medical libraries across North America. Fill out an interlibrary loan request form and submit to CovenantLibrary@covenanthealth.ca  Please speak to library staff directly if it is a RUSH request.

Request a title not listed in the NEOS catalogue?

Covenant Health Library Services may be able to borrow books from a wide variety of libraries across Canada. Fill out an interlibrary loan request form and submit to CovenantLibrary@covenanthealth.ca  Please speak to library staff directly if it is a RUSH request.

Recommend a new title for the library collection?

Request a literature search?

Fill out a literature search request form and submit to CovenantLibrary@covenanthealth.ca  Please speak to library staff directly if it is a RUSH request or a complex question. To learn more about this service please consult our literature search standards.

Access the latest journal articles in my field?

Visit this page for instructions on how to set up electronic table of contents alerts for journals in your field and/or subject alerts to automatically search for new articles on a particular topic on a regular basis.

Find a list of databases available to staff?

Covenant Health Library Services works cooperatively with Alberta Health Services Knowledge Resource Service (KRS) to develop Subject Guides on a variety of medical and health related topics.  Subject Guides include links to relevant databases, e-journals and e-books, guidelines, patient education, social media, and more.

Find ebooks and online journals?

Electronic Resources (A-Z) offers a complete listing of all the electronic books and journals that are available to Covenant Health/AHS staff.  E-books are also included in the NEOS library catalogue. Browse our largest e-book collection at NEOS ebooks.

Access e-resources from home or offsite?

Most of our online resources, including the ejournals, ebooks and research databases, are available to you at home if you have an Internet connection.

1. Go to http://krs.ahs.ca

2. Select the resource you would like to access.

3. Some resources are free and do not require authentication (e.g. PubMed). If the resource requires authentication you will see a screen asking you to login.

4. Enter your Covenant Health (AHS) network login, just as you would to log on to a computer at work, and password. You will now be taken to the resource.

You can also access e-resources through http://my.compassionnet.ca > Employee Centre > My Tools & Resources > Library Services. Look for the "Most Popular Resources" section on the Library Services page.

Access wifi at the libraries?

Misericordia Weinlos Library (Rm 1NW-32) now offers wifi access. We expect to have wifi at the Grey Nuns library as well in 2017!

Find a computer workstation?

Grey Nuns Health Sciences Library (Room 0634) offers 4 computer workstations.  Misericordia Weinlos Library (Room 1NW-32) offers 3 computer workstations. These computers are available for Covenant Health staff and physicians to do library research, check email, access ePeople, work on CLiC learning modules, and conduct other hospital business.  Patients & visitors are directed to the closest Edmonton Public Library.

Find a photocopier/scanner/fax machine?

Both library locations have a photocopier with scanning and faxing capabilities available for Covenant Health staff use.  Personal use will be charged $0.10 per page

Find a VHS/DVD player?

DVDs can be viewed on computer workstations at both the Misericordia Weinlos Library (Rm 1NW-32) and the Grey Nuns Health Sciences Library (Room 0634). The Grey Nuns library also has a VHS player.

Access library services as a student on temporary placement?

If your post secondary institution participates in the NEOS library consortium you can use your existing library card to borrow, pick-up and return NEOS library materials at either the Grey Nuns Health Sciences Library or the Misericordia Weinlos Library. You may use the library computer workstations to conduct research. Printing cost is $0.10 per page. Library staff are available to assist you with using electronic resources, but will not conduct literature searches or obtain journal articles for non-hospital business. Contact your postsecondary institution’s library for interlibrary loans/document delivery services to support your coursework.

Arrange to have an exam proctored?

Covenant Health library staff will proctor exams for Covenant Health staff and for postsecondary students currently on placement at Covenant Health as library staffing permits. Library hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 7:30 – 15:45. A request form must be submitted library staff. Please contact us CovenantLibrary@covenanthealth.ca  library well ahead of your exam date to make arrangements.
