Information & Privacy

Covenant Health is subject to Alberta’s Health Information Act (“HIA”) and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FOIPP”).  The HIA and FOIPP govern the collection, use and disclosure of the individually identifying information Covenant Health collects and set out our obligations for protecting that information.

1424 Our Services

Health Information Act & Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act Requests

HIA and FOIPP allow individuals to obtain copies of their own information or copies of general information held by Covenant Health, subject to certain rules. Information and Privacy provides advice to staff who receive requests from our patients, clients and residents for access to, or correction of, their own health information.   Requests made under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act are processed directly by Information and Privacy.

Privacy Breach Response

Covenant Health has a duty to protect the privacy and security of our patients, clients and residents’ health information and our staffs’ personal information. When a possible breach of privacy or security is identified Information and Privacy coordinates the investigation and response to the privacy breach or complaint and supports departments in developing mitigation strategies to minimize the risk of any future breaches.

Education and Training

Information and Privacy is responsible for development and delivery of privacy training for all staff, physicians, students, volunteers and others who perform a service for Covenant Health.

Privacy Risk Assessment

Privacy impact assessments (PIAs) must be developed and submitted to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner whenever a new system or practice is being implemented that involves the collection, use or disclosure of health information. Information and Privacy supports departments in completing PIAs and undertakes other audits and assessments to ensure Covenant Health has adequate privacy and security safeguards in place to protect the individually identifying information we hold.

Information & Privacy and I.T. Security & Awareness video

All staff can view the AHS Information & Privacy and I.T. Security & Awareness video found on line here . The video along with the HIA Overview, FOIP Overview and Key Messages for Employees information sheets provide a good introduction to the privacy legislation.

Information Privacy e-Learning Module

The e-Learning Information Privacy module highlights key concepts of Alberta’s privacy legislation, including the Health Information Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete.  All staff with direct access to personal or health information must complete this training annually, print off the Certificate of Completion and forward the certificate to their supervisor or manager.  The module is available in CLiC as a stand-alone course or as part of the Essential Education group of courses.  See instructions to access the Clic Module.

Please contact Information and Privacy at 1-866-254-8181 if you have any questions or to arrange a customized training session for your clinic or program.
