What Is Antimicrobial Stewardship?

Antimicrobial Stewardship is an interdisciplinary patient safety initiative that promotes appropriate selection, dosing, route and duration of antimicrobial therapy in order to: 

  • Optimize patient clinical outcomes
  • Minimize antibiotic adverse effects/toxicity
  • Reduce the selection of certain pathogenic organisms (e.g. C. difficile)
  • Reduce or stabilize antimicrobial resistance
